The lead levels of Providence drinking water have exceeded the federal limit since 2007, and we
believe it has contributed to growing lead poisoning cases. Our goal is to advocate for
equitable full lead pipe replacement.
Summary
After two years of research and collaboration with both advocacy groups and the Providence Water Supply Board, the Water Quality Project of BIP concluded in the spring of 2021. Analysts started in 2019 by learning about the history of water quality and advocacy in Providence, as well as about the city’s utility and its regulations. As the team grew and changed, it was able to deliver critical lessons learned from other cities that have completed a total lead line replacement. BIP is grateful for the opportunity to work with the Providence Water Supply Board, the Childhood Lead Action Project, and the Providence Lead Coordination Group. Analysts and team leads were able to learn from their work not only through observation, but through contribution as well. The complete history of BIP WQ can be found at this website.
