Digital Equity
The Digital Equity Team seeks to address the ongoing digital divide in Rhode Island by ensuring that state broadband funding is allocated equitably to populations most in need.
Overall Purpose
The ongoing access gap in digital resources significantly limits those in Rhode Island from vital resources. Low income households, older individuals, minorities of color, and individuals with disabilities have a lower percentage of broadband and computer access than the state average. The Digital Equity Team seeks to bridge this gap by ensuring that the funding for broadband access is allocated equitably. We work with Connect RI to ensure their Broadband Navigator accurately represents the reality of broadband access across the state, using research and data to create more nuanced maps. Long term, we are lobbying for AARP’s bill that establishes a statewide broadband community outreach coordinator who can provide support for vulnerable populations on navigating existing resources.
Short-Term Goals
Ensure that the Broadband Navigator accurately represents the reality of broadband access in Rhode Island, accounting for variables like income, density of population, demographics, and education level. Partner with AARP to aid older individuals and other vulnerable populations with the Broadband funding process through a designated broadband community outreach coordinator.
